Corrosion Engineering......the introduction.

Many student, corrosion means rust. Rust is one of corrosion product. However, the simple definition of corrosion is deterioration of metals or its properties because of reaction with its environment. May be, the corrosion deterioration is a weight gain; or is weight reduction; or the mechanical properties are affected. Majority are gave opinion that corrosion process are electrochemical in nature.

Why is corrosion prevention important? Corrosion engineer is concern with, example, a machine that sees ni chemical and spends its life in a controlled indoor environment, engineer may ignore all corrosion consideration in design. This can be unwise. Almost all environments can cause corrosion. Normal atmosphere can rust steels. Sometimes, small amount of corrosion product will affect serviceability.

In service a machine will be dripping with oils, chances are corrosion may not occur; but if parts in a machine or device are to be unlubricated in service, it may be wise to use corrosion prevention measures in every part where surface damage or property deterioration could affect serviceability.
